Overview:
Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.—Zechariah 9:12
Have you ever struggled with discouragement? Perhaps you have gone through a season where nothing seems to be going your way. It can be hard to maintain a sense of hope when counting our troubles seems easier than counting our blessings.

The prophets Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi ministered during a difficult time in Israel’s history. The Lord had provided a miracle, and Israel was allowed to return from exile (Ezra 1:1–4). While this should have been great news, only a small number returned. Many preferred to stay in Babylon. The returning group faced enormous obstacles. They had few resources, no political power, internal strife, and trouble from the Samaritans. It was hard to see God at work in all of this. Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi came with a message of rebuke, encouragement, and hope, pointing Israel back to God. May this devotional encourage your heart if you need a similar reminder today.
